Superior Spider-Man (2023) #1
New Superior Spider-Man #1 leaves readers hanging, with Otto not fully embracing the Superior role. Previews for upcoming issues are vague, raising questions about when he’ll become Superior. Some covers show him half in Doc Ock attire, adding to the uncertainty. While comics often have slow storytelling, readers expect more Superior Spider-Man action from the start. It’s a tough sell, especially for those wanting the full Superior experience immediately. The title might be a tease, and for readers out of the Spidey loop, the new lore can be confusing.
Batman #139
Jorge Jimenez’s artistic prowess shines in this Batman installment, elevating the visual experience. The lackluster Gotham War concludes, making way for Chip Zdarsky’s skillful storytelling. The Joker’s resurgence adds complexity, pushing Batman to confront Zur’s formidable rage in a gritty, visceral narrative. The familiar Batman versus Joker theme gains freshness with Zur’s inclusion. The compelling conclusion leaves readers eager for more, signaling a revitalized series under a new narrative trajectory. Cheers to sustained momentum in upcoming installments.
Amazing Spiderman #37
Latest ASM installment unfolds Rek Rap mystery and Limbo’s pursuit, but fails to resonate positively. Despite prior momentum, the arc feels like filler, lacking substance and engagement. Humor attempts fall flat, and action is minimal. Ed McGuiness’s art is commendable, but prospective readers may consider skipping this lackluster installment. Not a compelling lead-up to the anticipated Gang War.
GARGOYLES: DARK AGES #2
Epic battle in issue 1, Hudson leads gargoyle crew against foes, but not all join. Mages bring twists, personal stakes rise. Weisman expands characters’ world, delivers a surprise. Moss excels with art, capturing action and suspense flawlessly. A rollercoaster of emotion and vulnerability.
Spider Boy #1
Spider Boy joins Spider-Man in “End of the Spiderverse,” facing Madame Monstrosity. Secrets and a showdown await fans in this light-hearted superhero story.
Batman Gotham War Event Review
Approaching the “Gotham War” series with some reservations due to a deep affinity for Batman, I engaged with it but found it somewhat underwhelming. The introduction of Vandall Savage led to a conventional hero-unite-against-threat storyline. The potential consequences of Batman’s toxin in Jason didn’t materialize as expected, and the event fell short of expectations. While it may not be as disappointing as the Ms. Marvel Spiderman event, it leaves much to be desired. I wouldn’t recommend acquiring the trade edition of this event and suggest looking forward to the forthcoming storyline in Batman #139 instead.
ULTIMATE UNIVERSE #1
“ULTIMATE UNIVERSE #1” offered an enjoyable read, despite what seemed like a slow start, likely building up to something fantastic. The story introduced Tony Stark (Iron Lad) and a version of Reed Richards (Doom) on a mission to rescue Thor from an Asgardian prison. Afterward, their goal is to undo the Maker’s world-altering changes. While enjoyable, the issue would benefit from a recap of “Ultimate Invasion,” and some parts felt rushed. The portrayals of Reed’s Doom and Iron Lad were highlights, and the art depicting Thor was impressive. It’s a promising start, and the upcoming issues featuring Spider-Man, Black Panther, and X-Men are eagerly anticipated. One lingering question is why Thor didn’t call Mjolnir while in prison, or was it a unique choice?
Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees #1
“Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees” starts in the charming town of Woodbrook, inhabited by humanoid animals. Sam, a bear working at a hardware store, encounters a friendly duck who offers help with her car trouble. The story takes a shocking twist when it’s revealed that Sam has a dark secret, akin to the show “Dexter.” The art vividly portrays this twist. The jaw-dropping ending leaves readers eagerly anticipating issue #2. A must-read gem for 2023, this six-part series is bound to keep you hooked!
GARGOYLES: DARK AGES #1
As a long-time Gargoyles fan, “GARGOYLES: DARK AGES #1” was a must-read. It delves into the Gargoyles’ history, maintaining beloved characters from the main series while introducing new faces to the clan. The story is accessible for newcomers, offering character development for Hudson, the clan leader, and humans Prince Malcolm and Robert, who seek an alliance. Drew Moss’s impressive art, especially during the flight into battle, stands out. Excited for issue #2 to see how the war unfolds, making it a great addition to the Gargoyles story.
The Devils That Wears My Face #1 Review
For a thrilling horror read this spooky season, this comic is a true nail-biter. Set in Spain, it starts with three priests meeting their tragic end while trying to exorcise the demon Legion. Father Vieri, a seasoned exorcist, is called from Rome to save Hugo’s son. However, things take a sinister turn as Father Vieri can’t escape the demon’s grip, leading to a gruesome twist. The artwork is a dark, grim masterpiece with bursts of vibrant, surreal colors, and the depiction of blood and gore is spine-tingling. This gem discovered at a comic convention promises a terrifying rollercoaster of a story you won’t want to miss.
Road to Valhalla #1
“Road to Valhalla” grabbed my attention at NYCC 23, thanks to Hector Rodriguez’s striking cover art. Meeting the creators and hearing the backstory was an awesome experience, leading me to pick up all three books in the series, complete with autographs. The first installment was an enjoyable read, with a slow start but a promising build-up. The artwork is truly awesome, with impressive detail. I’m eagerly anticipating issue #2 to see where the story goes next.
NightFall: Michael’s Awakening #1 2018
This comic blends everyday life with supernatural elements, centering on Michael’s relationships with his girlfriend and mother. The transition from black and white to color when he becomes a werewolf is a striking artistic choice, emphasizing the supernatural. The straightforward storytelling caters to readers seeking clear character development. Michael’s transformation into a werewolf promises to be a central narrative focus, with his experiences and challenges in this new reality captivating readers.
